{ Dilvulgación científica para niños }

Esta semana me han escrito un par de correos sobre divulgación científica para niños. En el primero, me han propuesto escribir un texto de astronomía para un periódico. En el otro, Pedro J. Hernández me preguntaba si en español existía algo similar a Science News for Kids. La verdad es que desconocía la existencia de ese servicio. En español no encuentro nada similar (lo que no quiere decir que no exista). Pedro nos anima a que se ponga en marcha una iniciativa al respecto. Pero ¿cómo se hace divulgación científica para niños? Mi experiencia en este terreno es nula.

Ojeando a los artículos de Science News for Kids son textos con un glosario al final. Mi intuición me dice que no es el formato más adecuado para niños, quizás sí para adolescentes. Entiendo que a los niños les llama más la atención textos con muchos dibujos, vídeos o animaciones donde puedan interactuar. Los textos más elaborados me parecen más adecuados a partir de la adolescencia.

El pasado verano estuve leyendo algunos libros de Esa horrible ciencia y me quedé fascinado. Son pequeños libros sobre ciencia y cultura general, que hablan sobre el espacio, el tiempo o los dinosaurios. Tienen bastante texto pero también muchos dibujos. El tono general de los libros es humorístico. Y no solo enganchan a los niños, sino a los mayores por igual. Me recuerdan mucho a los libros de la Editorial SM que me engancharon cuando era pequeño, como la Guía del Buen Detective, Cómo hacer de Espías, Guía del Explorador...

Así que, sabiendo que hay docentes (y padres cultivados) que leen esta bitácora, les pregunto: ¿cómo hacer divulgación científica para niños? ¿Qué estilo y formatos son los más adecuados? ¿Qué hay que tener en cuenta? ¿Qué hay que evitar?

A todas estas, hace un ratito acabo de ver en Microsiervos comentan Ciencionetas, vídeos de experimentos para hacer en casa.

«La Agencia de Noticias para la Difusión de la Ciencia y la Tecnología tiene un canal de vídeos en YouTube en el que unas marionetas -las Ciencionetas- realizan con la ayuda de unas manos unos sencillos experimentos que se pueden hacer en casas sin mayores problemas, explicando además al final de estos lo que ha sucedido».

Parece una iniciativa fantástica y me recuerda a otras que ya he citado por aquí, la del Planetario de Pamplona y su Vampiro Espacial; o la de Marimba Marionetas y su Niño que quería ser Harry Potter. Por cierto, que también el Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos se ha apuntado a las marionetas en este Año Internacional del Espacio y están preparando un programa de planetario con los Galigalitos (tienen una pinta estupenda).

PD: Una colección de libros de ciencia para niños muy interesante, que además se pueden descargar por capítulos, Ciencia infinita.

En el año 2006 Omnis Cellula empezó a publicar una revista divulgativa de ciencia y cultura dirigida a alumnos de la ESO en catalán. A mí me gusta bastante. Y respecto a los Science News for Kids, a mí no me parece mal el nivel. Recordemos que la mayoría de las personas interesadas en estas cuestiones a esas edades tienen un coeficiente inteligencia superior a la media, por lo que les viene bien leer cosas así. ;)

Mamá: ... A mis niñas les encanta el sitio de la NASA sobre Marte para niños Mars for kids Pero a mi no me acaba de gustar. También les gusta mucho una serie de la tele que se llama the The Magic School Bus. A mi ese formato de divulgación si que me gusta. Cuando eran más pequeñas les gustaba la serie de Stanley que es propone buscar científicamene la solución a problemas observando el mundo animal. También les gustó mucho la exposición de Matemáticas que hubo en Madrid hace un par de años, incluso más que el muse de la ciencia de Valencia. Yo creo que porque en la exposición de Madrid procuraban relacionar más lo que explicaban con el trabajo de los matemáticos y con la vida cotidiana. Por otra parte yo no la he visto pero me han hablado muy bien de ellas, y estoy pensado en buscar las series esa de "Erase una vez el hombre..." y similares a ver si les gustaba.

Creo que hay que evitar que parezca que la ciencia es cosa de "magia" y también que es algo que no se puede entender. A mi me gusta cuando se propone como un modo de avieriguar algo o como una manera de razonar y se guía al niño para que sea él quien haga "ciencia". Hay un sitio en francés orientado a dar apoyo a la enseñanza de la ciencia en la escuela infantil y primaria que no he explorado a fondo pero que tenía muy buena pinta. De ahí sacaban sus actividades los profes de Ángela cuando estaba en el liceo francés: La main à la pâte

Illyria: Gracias, de todas formas pensaba en un público infantil general, no solamente a chicos con especial curiosidad. He visto un poquito por encima Omnis Cellula y al menos la parte de artículos creo que peca también de mucho texto. Anónima: ¡Gracias! Por lo que veo Mars for kids son juegos en Flash. El autobús mágico es fantástico. Me lo comentó lgs una vez, vi un par de episodios. Creo que son geniales para niños, al menos yo disfruté viendo qué bien trataban a la ciencia y lo divertidos que eran. Al final de cada capítulo, salía el productor de la serie (en dibujos) y respondía a llamadas telefónicas de los niños que le pedían explicaciones sobre la parte fantástica del episodio. De Stanley no sabía nada, la propuesta parece interesante. ¿Te entendí mal o has dicho que no has visto las series de "Érase una vez..."? o_O Sobre evitar que parezca que la ciencia es cosa de magia, parece loable, pero justamente casi todos los ejemplos que hemos visto usan cierto tipo de "magia" para embellecer la historia: un autobús que viaja a lugares imposibles, unos animales que hablan, etc. Una ventaja que veo con respecto a los mayores es que los niños suelen ser por lo general muy curiosos y tratan de descubrir cómo funciona el mundo. Hacia la adolescencia cambian de prioridades.

Recién descubro este interesante espacio, felicitaciones. A través de la divulgación, los especialistas en la materia, motivan, promueven y facilitan formas de desarrollar capacidades (conocimientos, actitudes, procedimientos) para la ciencia en los niños. Hacer divulgación científica no es tarea fácil, debes considerar ciertos aspectos de la población de niños a los que va dirigida: modelos mentales, formas tradicionales de aprendizaje, conocimientos previos, etc. Además de ello, los divulgadores deben tener una sólida formación en el área a divulgar, y ser preferentemente investigadores en dicha área. La ciencia y la magia se encuentran diametralmente opuestas, por lo que no es conveniente confundirlas, quizás si podría utilizarse como elemento motivador en un instante, siempre y cuando, luego se explique que el fenómeno abordado tiene una explicación consistente, y claro si esta bien explicada "científica". Más allá del dominio de ciertos temas, si logramos que los niños adopten una actitud científica para resolver sus dudas y los problemas que se les presentan, podremos sentirnos satisfechos...
