{ 20 años del descubrimiento del cometa Hale-Bopp }

El 24 de julio de 1995 dos aficionados estadounidenses descubrieron de forma independiente un cometa. Estaba en magnitud 10 en las cercanías del cúmulo estelar M70, en la constelación de Sagitario. Hoy en día casi todos los cometas descubiertos tienen nombre de algún proyecto robotizado de búsqueda. Pero en aquel entonces Alan Hale y Thomas Bopp sólo usaron sus ojos y sus modestos telescopios. (La historia en detalle es más apasionante, porque en realidad Bopp no tenía telescopio propio y nunca había observado ningún cometa. Lo descubrió observando con un grupo de amigos, y tras convencerse de que era un nuevo objeto, tuvo que conducir a toda velocidad hasta la población más cercana para enviar un telegrama a la Oficina de Telegramas Astronómicos dirigida por Brian Marsden, de la Unión Astronómica Internacional. Hale, en cambio, envió un correo electrónico).



El descubrimiento fue excepcional porque se trataba de un cometa muy brillante, a pesar de encontrarse entre las órbitas de Júpiter y Saturno (8 unidades astronómicas). Recuerdo muy bien la fecha. Por aquella época dirigía Meteors, la revista de la Sociedad de Observadores de Cometas y Meteoros de España (SOMY)CE. Y el del Hale-Bopp fue el primer gran descubrimiento del que recibí noticias a través de Internet, casi en tiempo real. En la asociación astronómica, la tradición había sido recibir alertas a través del fabuloso fax de nuestro compañero Cayetano Santana. Pero en esta ocasión, las listas de correo electrónico comunicaron a las pocas horas la noticia del Hale-Bopp.

Con las semanas se descartó que el cometa sufriera un estallido pasajero de actividad. Las imágenes del Telescopio Espacial Hubble situaron el núcleo del cometa en 40 km de diámetro, cinco veces mayor que el del Halley. Y, por supuesto, lo mejor estaba por llegar. La órbita, refinada con la identificación del cometa en placas fotográficas, indicaba que se acercaría a sólo 1.3 UA de la Tierra y 0.9 UA del Sol en 1997. El espectáculo estaba casi asegurado. Se decía que sería un Gran Cometa que acabaría con la sequía que desde el cometa West de 1976 asolaba a los observadores. pero como dice David Levy «los cometas son como los gatos: tienen colas y hacen lo que les da la gana».



Y llegado el momento, el cometa fue todo un acontecimiento social. Durante el mes de marzo y abril de 1997, el Hale-Bopp fue visible a simple vista desde ciudad. De hecho, muchas ciudades y pueblos apagaron sus luces durante observaciones públicas multitudinarias. Las imágenes del Hale-Bopp coparon los telediarios y la prensa. Millones de personas en todo el mundo pudieron ver un gran cometa en los cielos boreales. Finalmente no fue tan espectacular como el West y tuvo que competir con el Hyakutake, que dio su propio recital un año antes, en 1996.



La campaña observacional del Hale-Bopp fue muy intensa. Desde el Roque de los Muchachos, y también con material modesto, se descubrió un tercer tipo de cola cometaria con la CoCam (cámara cometaria), una cola de sodio. Especialmente relevante fue el seguimiento realizado con cámaras CCD desde el Observatorio Astronómico de Mallorca. Los grandes observatorios le dedicaron tiempo esencial durante los momentos críticos. Pero el OAM, a pesar de sus modestos medios, realizó la cobertura más constante, lo que les valió el reconocimiento internacional.



Internet jugó un papel relevante en la popularización del cometa, complementaria a la de los grandes medios de comunicación. La páginas de Ron Baalke y Charles Morris de la NASA se convirtieron en un centro de información esencial, recopilando imágenes y observaciones de todo el mundo. La de Baalke sobrepasó el millón de visitas en un sólo día, batiendo el récord de la NASA (aunque fue superado meses después por la llegada de la Mars Pathfinder). Aquí en España fue la Sociedad de Observadores de Cometas y Meteoros quien organizó la campaña visual de observación del Hale-Bopp. Como en aquel momento no existían blogs, pero si listas de correo, quien escribe estas líneas mantuvo un boletín de noticias y una página dedicada a recopilar información sobre el Hale-Bopp en español (de la que archive.org aún se acuerda).

El Hale-Bopp tiene un periodo de 2.500 años, así que no volveremos a verlo visualmente hasta dentro de muchas generaciones. Pero mi historia sobre el Hale-Bopp finaliza en febrero de 1998. El Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias fue anfitrión del I Congreso Internacional del Hale-Bopp en Tenerife. Así que me di una escapadita y durante un día asistí a las conferencias. Por allí estaban los mayores expertos en cometas como Brian Marsden y Richard West (el descubridor del cometa West). Astrónomos amateurs no habían muchos, salvo los fuera de serie de Mallorca (si no me falla la memoria, Salvador Sánchez y Jaime Nomen), los propios descubridores del cometa, Alan Hale y Thomas Bopp y yo mismo. Así que, aprovechando un descanso, compré el libro sobre el cometa escrito por Hale y prologado por Bopp y les pedí a ambos que me lo firmaran.

De todas las aficiones que he tenido, y la de Internet ha sido enorme, es probablemente la astronomía la que mayores satisfacciones me ha producido. Cumplo ahora el doble de años de los que tenía cuando se descubrió el Hale-Bopp. A pesar de que no esté ya tan activo como aficionado ni como divulgador, no he perdido mi pasión por ella.
