{ Marte: Anuncio a las 11 }

A las 11 no, pero dentro de unas pocas horas, la NASA realizará un gran anuncio en sus oficinas de Washington. Los que han seguido las pequeñas ruedas de prensa sobre los Mars Rovers ya venían especulando esta posibilidad en los últimos días. Aunque algunos creen que podría tratarse de un anuncio espectacular, como que han encontrado fósiles, los expertos creen que se trata de la confirmación que en el pasado Marte tuvo agua en estado líquido durante mucho tiempo. Lo suficiente, quizás, para que la vida apareciera.

Por ejemplo, en Slashdot se cita a un artículo en Der Spiegel con el spoiler de la noticia: con el espectrómetro Mössbauer y el espectrómetro de rayos X, se habría encontrado un compuesto de sulfato de hierro, que en principio se forma solamente en presencia de agua.

Por otro lado, según nos cuenta Javier Armentia, el geólogo planetario español Francisco Anguita cree que la NASA habría encontrado «magnetita gris, evidencia de que ha habido flujos de agua... si es que ese mineral tiene en Marte el mismo origen que en la Tierra».

Actualización: Pues según acaban de contar, efectivamente, el descubrimiento es que en Meridiani Planum hay sulfato de hierro. Mediante el espectrómetro Moessbauer, se ha identificado una roca llamada jarosita con alto contenido en sal. En la Tierra, estas rocas se forman en presencia de agua o estuvieron expuestas durante mucho tiempo a agua salada.

Por otra parte, como reza el dicho, a la tercera va la vencida y hoy se lanzó la sonda Rosetta, una de las misiones espaciales más ambiciosas de la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA). Tardará 10 años en llegar a un cometa no muy conocido, para seguirlo después durante 1 año según se acerca al Sol y comprobar su comportamiento. Además, una pequeña subsonda se posará (por vez primera) sobre la superficie de este cometa. ¡Ánimo, ESA!
