{ Popularización de la ciencia con el iPad }

Hace dos años, Apple lanzó al mercado un nuevo dispositivo que se ha convertido un éxito de ventas. Hoy en día es habitual ver iPads en reuniones de negocios, debates de periodismo e incluso en el Congreso. Hay muchos que tachan este aparato de “snob”. Yo mismo, cuando Steve Jobs realizó la presentación sobre el iPad, fui escéptico sobre sus posibilidades. Sin embargo, dos vídeos cambiaron mi opinión por completo. A los pocos días tras el lanzamiento del iPad, YouTube se había llenado de vídeos con reseñas de la tableta. De ellos, me llamaron poderosamente la atención los protagonizados por niños y ancianos. Un padre grababa a su hijo de dos años jugando un juego de baloncesto: a pesar del limitado control motriz que el pequeño niño tenía sobre su mano, era perfectamente capaz de usar su regordete dedo índice para arrastrar la pelota virtual en la pantalla. De igual forma, una persona longeva, utilizaba el iPad para leer y escribir.

Las implicaciones de estos vídeos me parecieron importantes. Cualquier docente que se dedique a la formación de personas mayores, conoce las dificultades que tienen para hacerse con el control del ratón. Lo mismo ocurre con los niños pequeños. Al eliminar la necesidad de usar punteros, como lápices y ratones, se simplificó enormemente el uso. El interfaz gráfico se repensó para ser usado mediante dedos y gestos, usando iconos grandes. La limitada potencia de cálculo también obligó a eliminar la multitarea, lo cual parece una desventaja. Sin embargo, así se llega a un interfaz donde la aplicación en ejecución siempre está en el primer plano: no hay múltiples ventanas que se solapen u oculten, ni barra de tareas. El éxito del iPad radica en su interfaz extremadamente simple. Es tan intuitivo, que hasta un niño de dos años puede aprenderlo. El iPad es los PCs lo que la Wii a las consolas de juegos: cambia el paradigma del interfaz y amplía el espectro de usuarios.

Motivado por estas razones, aprendí a programar para el iPad. Y como suele ser habitual en quien suscribe, sólo era cuestión de tiempo en encontrar una buena excusa para relacionarlo con la divulgación científica. Lo que en este caso fue excepcional el apoyo encontrado: la oficina de comunicación científica del Observatorio Austral Europeo (ESO), liderada por Lars Lindberg. Entre otras cosas, esta oficina fue la que puso en marcha el Año Internacional de la Astronomía (2009) a través de la Unión Astronómica Internacional.

La primera aplicación que desarrollé para el ESO fue la de Portal to the Universe, inicialmente para el iPhone. El portal es un enorme agregador de noticias, blogs y podcasts relacionados con el Espacio, lanzado por el ESO durante el AIA 2009. Posee un equipo de editores que realizan diariamente una selección de las mejores noticias. La aplicación nativa permite leer las noticias en el móvil y ver y escuchar los últimos podcasts enlazados desde el portal. La lanzamos a comienzos de 2011 y tuvo buena acogida.

Esa buena acogida nos animó a lanzarnos a la conquista del iPad. A tiempo para el lanzamiento en Europa del iPad 2, desarrollé dos aplicaciones de fotografías astronómicas, que son las que más recorrido han tenido. La dos comparten una base de código y difieren en el ‘branding’ y contenidos. La primera es ESO Top 100 Images, que permite navegar por el ránking de las mejores 100 imágenes realizadas con los telescopios del ESO en los observatorios chilenos. Cada imagen viene acompañada de texto complementario y se puede descargar al álbum de fotos para enviarla por correo o ponerla de fondo. Como extra, añadí un modo de presentación que pasa las imágenes automáticamente con música new age (del grupo griego Zero-Project). El ránking se actualiza periódicamente a través de Internet, consultando un API remoto. La aplicación hermana es Hubble Top 100 Images, que muestra la selección de cien imágenes realizada por la oficina europea del Telescopio Espacial en su página, spacetelescope.org. Las características son exactamente las mismas.

El éxito del Hubble Top 100 fue arrollador. Fue aplicación destacada por Apple en las App Store de 126 países y eso catapultó las descargas. En los ránkings diarios, la aplicación llegó a número 1 absoluto en 11 países y número 1 en la categoría de educación en 75 países. Calculo que durante este año las aplicaciones han tenido más de 500.000 de descargas, con una proporción de 10:1 entre la del Hubble y la del ESO. Las opiniones que los usuarios han dejado en la App Store han sido muy positivas, con una media ponderada de 4 estrellas sobre 5. Casi todos los comentarios destacan las belleza de las fotografías, cuyo mérito es -por supuesto- del Telescopio Espacial y sus científicos. En todo caso, es muy gratificante leer comentarios (¡o tratar de hacerlo!) de usuarios de todo el mundo, en holandés, japonés, chino, alemán, inglés, ruso, español... Como curiosidad, hay usuarios que creen que la aplicación es de la NASA. Incluso alguien opina que la ESA no debería llevarse crédito por su participación en el Hubble. En fin.

Hace unos meses, decidimos actualizar la aplicación para aprovechar las nuevas características del iPad 3 e implementamos algunas de las sugerencias más demandadas por los usuarios. Estas actualizaciones fueron publicadas hace una semana. Entre otras cosas, en la versión 2.0 hemos incluído soporte de imágenes de alta resolución para el Retina Display del iPad 3. También añadí un índice con miniaturas para navegar por la colección de fotos fácilmente. Además, se muestran más datos adicionales, como los instrumentos utilizados para capturar las imágenes, la distancia al objeto celeste y un enlace a las coordenadas celestes en WikiSky.org. Las estadísticas de actualización también han sido asombrosas, y demuestran que un gran porcentaje de usuarios han mantenido instalada la aplicación.

Para explicar el éxito de unas y otras aplicaciones hay que recurrir tanto a la oportunidad, y la buena factura, como a la suerte: el ESO arropó la iniciativa, y no sólo quiso una aplicación para sus imágenes sino también para las del Hubble. La NASA no se había lanzado a por el iPad, y no existía ninguna aplicación oficial del Hubble, algo que supo aprovechar la oficina de comunicación europea. Pero el momento clave fue cuando los editores de Apple decidieron destacar el Hubble Top 100 en las App Stores, momento en el que se disparan todos los contadores. La aplicación a priori más atractiva para los aficionados a la astronomía, por la cantidad de contenidos y su utilidad diaria, Portal to the Universe, es sin embargo la menos popular de las tres. Y eso, a pesar de estar disponible en iPhone e iPad.

Quienes tenemos experiencia en divulgación astronómica sabemos que las fotografías celestes se venden solas. En Internet, el Astronomical Image of the Day (APOD) es uno de los lugares más populares. Las fotografías y time lapses de Daniel López también han dado la vuelta al mundo (con varios millones de visualizaciones). Las imágenes astronómicas son universales, no necesitan traducción. Inspiran y conmueven a gente de todas las edades, lugares y condiciones. Y es que, a pesar de lo mucho que los divulgadores tratemos de emular a Carl Sagan, a veces lo más simple es lo más eficaz y, efectivamente, una imagen vale más que mil palabras.
