{ Plutón en la ficción }

En estos momentos, la sonda New Horizons está sobrevolando Plutón, el ex-planeta. Para llegar allí tuvo que impulsarse a gran velocidad y ahora no tiene forma de frenar, por lo que el sobrevuelo dura sólo unas pocas horas. Los instrumentos de la sonda están recogiendo todos los datos posibles y luego tardará meses en enviarlos todos a la Tierra.

Como cuenta Enrique Joven, Plutón fue descubierto en 1930, y durante 75 años fue considerado un planeta. En 1976, en unas fotografías se vio que Plutón tenía compañía, un enorme satélite llamado Caronte. Plutón y Caronte realmente forman parte de un sistema doble planetario. Pero en 2006, se descubrió otro cuerpo de dimensiones similares a los de Plutón en el Cinturón de Kuiper, Eris. Así que los astrónomos se vieron obligados a crear una definición más precisa de planeta. Como resultado, Plutón fue reclasificado como planeta enano.

Plutón es más pequeño que la Luna. No es un gigante gaseoso como Júpiter, ni tiene un sistema de anillos espectacular como Saturno, ni está cerquita de la Tierra como Marte o Venus. De hecho, está bastante alejado del Sol, 30 veces más lejos que la Tierra. Quizás ésta sea la razón por la cual no abunden las referencias a Plutón en la ficción.



A comienzos del siglo XX, en su mitología de Chutluh, H.P. Lovecraft había situado el planeta Yuggoth en el exterior del Sistema Solar. En sus propias palabras:

«¿Sabe que Einstein se equivoca y que ciertos objetos y fuerzas pueden moverse a una velocidad mayor que la luz? [...] Espero visitar otros planetas e incluso otras estrellas y galaxias. El primer viaje será a Yuggoth, el mundo más cercano al nuestro de entre los poblados por los seres. Es un orbe oscuro y extraño, en los confines de nuestro Sistema Solar... desconocido hasta ahora por los astrónomos terrestres. [...] Hay enormes ciudades en Yuggoth... grades hileras de torres con terrazas construidas en piedra negra de la misma clase que la que traté de enviarle. Procedía de Yuggoth. El Sol allí no es más brillante que una estrella, pero los seres no necesitan luz. [...] Los negros ríos de brea que fluyen bajo aquellos misteriosos y ciclópeos puentes... estructuras construidas por alguna raza anterior, extinta y olvidada antes de que los seres llegase a Yuggoth desde los postreros abismos... bastarían para convertir a un hombre en un Dante o un Poe si retuviese la suficiente cordura como para poder contar lo que ha visto».

Tras el descubrimiento de Plutón, Lovecraft sugirió que podrían tratarse del mismo planeta :-)

En la literatura de ciencia ficción algunos otros autores populares han utilizado Plutón como paisaje de sus escritos. En 1968, Larry Niven publicó La espera, un cuento corto donde un astronauta naufraga en Plutón... (de qué me sonará ese argumento).

En formato de novela, Niven también escribió El mundo de los ptavvs: en ella, Plutón había sido creado como luna de Neptuno pero un choque de una nave interestelar cuasi-lumínica lo había desplazado hasta su órbita actual.
Curiosamente, se cree que la luna de Neptuno Tritón tuvo la historia contraria: se habría creado como planeta enano en el Cinturón de Kuiper y en algún momento quedó capturado por Neptuno. Una evidencia importante es que Tritón gira en sentido contrario al del resto de satélites de Neptuno.

En 1984, Kim Stanley Robinson (autor de la Trilogía de Marte), publicó Icehenge: La memoria perdida. En esta novela se descubre un misterioso monumento de hielo en el polo norte de Plutón, Icehenge (no sé qué opinará David Bowman del argumento).



Pasando al mundo de la animación, tenemos a Viaje a la última galaxia o Acorazado espacial Yamato. Estrenada en 1974, y recordada con nostalgia por muchos que ahora peinan canas (o no peinan ya ;), en esta serie japonesa los alienígenas bombardean la Tierra desde una base en Plutón, que el Yamato destruye.



La fama de mundo helado dio alas a los guionistas de Futurama. En el episodio 5 de la tercera temporada, estrenado en 2001, Bender y compañía tienen como misión remolcar al Juan Valdez, un carguero espacial de materia oscura colombiana que (como era previsible con Bender al mando) sufre un vertido... en Plutón, el último refugio de los pingüinos en el Sistema Solar.

Ya aquí en España, en 2006 se estrenó en TVE la serie en tono de humor Plutón B.R.B Nero, dirigida por Álex de la Iglesia. La serie toma el nombre de la nave espacial donde sucede la acción.



Y en lo que es posiblemente la serie de cifi más friki de la actualidad, Rick y Morty, en la primera temporada sus protagonistas son abducidos y llevados a Plutón. La razón: el padre de Morty insiste en que él de pequeño aprendió que Plutón era un planeta, y hace un modelo del Sistema Solar con Plutón. Los plutonianos, obviamente, están encantados con la idea :)

PD: ¡Me había faltado una referencia directa a la misión New Horizons! En el capítulo 8 de la temporada 12 de The Big Bang Theory, Raj está preocupado porque la sonda ha llegado a Plutón y no tiene aún noticias de su estado. Teme que un fragmento de hielo puede haberla destruido.
