El Planetario de Pamplona y la Sociedad Española de Astronomía han puesto en marcha una campaña para darle nombre a un sistema planetario. Se llamaría la Estrella Cervantes, y sus planetas serían Quijote, Rocinante, Sancho y Dulcinea. La estrella es μ (mi) Arae, una estrella austral. El concurso está organizado por la Unión Astronómica Internacional y las propuestas ganadoras se seleccionarán por votos populares. Para votar, hay que ir a la página de la UAI dedicada a μ Arae, elegir la opción de Cervantes entre las diferentes propuestas y hacer clic en "Vote".
μ Arae es una estrella situada a 50 años luz del Sistema Solar. Es una estrella de tipo solar, aunque es algo más vieja, tiene un 10% más de masa y es un 90% más luminosa que el Sol. Es posible verla a simple vista desde los cielos australes, pero a duras penas, ya que tiene magnitud 5. Con una declinación de -51° es un poco complicado de localizarla desde el Hemisferio Norte. Desde Canarias la estrella se asoma 10° por encima del horizonte, y teniendo magnitud 5, requiere cielos oscuros y transparentes. Esta es la carta de localización de μ Arae realizada con Stellarium. Tomando como referencia la cola del Escorpión, está un poquitín por debajo. La hora de máxima altura sobre el horizonte en estos días es sobre las 22:30 de la noche.
Como 10° en magnitud 5 es difícil, pero no imposible, anoche me animé a intentar cazar la estrella desde el mirador astronómico de Puntagorda, un pueblito de La Palma. Las condiciones no eran las mejores, porque había algo de brumas (que después de varios días de altas temperaturas, el cuerpo las agradecía) y éstas amplificaron la contaminación luminosa justo por donde estaban las constelaciones de Escorpión y Ara. Aquí está: μ Arae desde el Hemisferio Norte.

Reto conseguido, pero técnicamente, las fotos dejan que desear si se ven a gran resolución (enfoque deficiente y sin guiado). A ver si alguien con mejor pericia y equipo saca unas buenas tomas de la estrella desde por aquí arriba.
PD 2015-08-16: Ayer pude obtener mejores fotografías desde un lugar excepcional: las inmediaciones del Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos. A 2400 metros de altura sobre el mar, sin calima, sin contaminación luminosa, con luna luna y completamente despejado, casi diría que pude ver μ Arae a simple vista. Desde luego, estaba a tiro de prismáticos (que no tengo). Lo que sí mejoraron mucho fueron las fotografías que pude obtener. Con sólo 40 segundos de exposición no sólo se ve μ Arae, sino muchas estrellas más débiles a su alrededor, nada que ver con las imágenes en brumas del día anterior.

Buenas tardes Víctor. Soy seguidor de “el lobo rayado”, entre otras páginas de astronomía. Hoy me dio por echar un vistazo en el cuaderno de bitácora. Y mira por donde me tope con esta historia y volvió mi duda de si podría verla desde donde yo vivo. Claro que estoy convencido de que no es posible por la latitud de España, pero es que veras. Aquí en cañete de las Torres, Córdoba somos aficionados a hacer senderismo nocturno. En una ocasión, fuimos a un punto geodésico que esta a 421mt sobre el nivel del mar y entre las fotos que hicimos, tengo esta de alguien subido en la columna del geodésico en la que se aprecia las estrellas de escorpio. la columna tiene una altura, así que la foto la hicimos de abajo para arriba lo que me hace pensar que hay bastante pedazo hacia el horizonte pues el geodésico esta bien alto. he visto muchas veces la cola del escorpión. Por eso mi pregunta ¿seguro que no se ve mu ara desde aquí en ningún momento? Pero no he vuelto a subir al geodésico. De todas formas gracias por las fotos. Un saludo

¡Hola Miguel Ángel! Bienvenido a la bitácora :) Córdoba está a 37°N, lo que significa que en teoría se pueden ver estrellas de hasta -53° de declinación. μ Arae tiene -51° de declinación, lo que significa que sólo la verías 2 grados por encima de tu horizonte. Y con la extinción atmosférica, siendo una estrella débil, es complicado. Quizás no imposible, pero tendrías que ir a algún lugar bastante oscuro, con cielos muy limpios y con cierta altura para ganar horizonte.
